Columbus State Community College - NALA CPE Exam Review

Columbus State Community College is offering a NALA Certified Paralegal Exam (CPE) Review Class during Spring Semester which starts in January 2020. If there are PACO members who are interested, they can register online or in Eibling Hall, or they can contact Tom Shanahan (tshanaha@cscc.edu), Deb Hoffman (dhoffman@cscc.edu), or Cathy Ritterbusch (critterb@cscc.edu) if you need permission to enroll. The cost is the same as any other 3-hour class (and academic credit is awarded).


NFPA - Message from PACO's NFPA Primary and Secondary Representatives

Did you know the NFPA website has an entire section dedicated to your career? You can search for a job, post your resume and have your resume reviewed. As soon as you click on the tab labeled 'Careers' you will see a search bar, featured paralegal jobs and resume review.

From the landing page of 'Careers' there are drop downs for employers and job seekers. Those looking for a job can set up an account, get alerts for jobs in various locations, along with various resources to assist with your job search. For more information, click here.

Franklin County Law Library 2020 Brown Bag Lunch Series

Brown Bag Programs for the first half of 2020 have been scheduled, see the complete schedule below. The cooler months are fast-approaching and many of Columbus' homeless families will be without bare essentials. As you begin shopping for your own family this fall season, consider purchasing an extra coat or pair of socks for a homeless child, or donating your gently used coat to a homeless mother. The warmth of your generosity will be felt in the hearts of the families that stay with us this season.

Here is a list of urgently needed items for families at our Family Center:

  • Coats! (new, or gently used and freshly laundered, all sizes)
  • Diapers (size 5 & 6)
  • Pullups (all sizes)
  • Baby Wipes
  • Socks (new, all sizes)
  • Bottles
  • Sippy Cups

For donations larger than 3 medium-sized boxes, to schedule a tour at the time of your donation drop, or if you have any additional questions, please contact Krista Faist at 614-253-3910 ext. 3934 or kfaist@ywcacolumbus.org.

Calling on everyone with the easiest of tasks - meet the NFPA President's challenge made at the Convention in Rochester, New York and present/coordinate a webinar.

One easy and successful idea: "A day in the life of a [fill in the blank] paralegal!" While many of us struggle with the anxiety of public speaking, we likely could talk endless hours about what we do daily. We're all specialists in our work, and putting together a one-hour presentation would be a breeze. Learning what our colleagues are doing on a daily basis, and their shared tips and tricks for success, is a very valuable benefit.

We're happy to help you fine-tune a presentation, and the process of presenting couldn't be easier. PACO Paralegal Volunteers Needed for the Legal Aid Society of Columbus - Franklin County Driver's License Reinstatement Event

Calling all PACO Paralegals to assist the Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) as they are seeking volunteers for their two-day Franklin County Driver's License Reinstatement event. During the clinics, individuals will be able to meet with attorneys to receive advice about what they need to do to reinstate their drivers' licenses. Available resources onsite will include Municipal Court judges, clerk's office representative, Ohio BMV, Job & Family Services, Child Support Enforcement, insurance companies, driving schools, bankruptcy attorney, veterans' services, and volunteer lawyers. The Legal Aid Society of Columbus is in need of attorney and non-attorney volunteers. Non-attorneys can assist with intake, checkout, pulling BMV records, or client navigation around the clinic. Details and registration are below.

When: Wednesday December 4th and Thursday December 5th

Where: 369 S. High St. (1st Floor) at the corner of Mound & High

*NOTE: There are morning and afternoon shifts available for both days. LASC will send additional logistics and details out closer to the date of the event.

      This is a reminder for those who have registered for the PACO-LASC Pro Bono Wills Clinic CLE, it is crucial that you attend this mandatory CLE in order to volunteer for Wills Clinics in 2020.       The NFPA 2019 Annual Convention took place in Rochester, NY from October 10-13, 2019, and was four days packed with information, networking and collaboration with other paralegal associations across the country.

      Each year at the convention there is a vote for new board members of which positions that have termed out. It is also a time to celebrate others who have contributed to the paralegal profession. This year there were also a total of 9 topics, and 1 bylaw resolution brought to the floor. Also, there were votes to create a Disciplinary Board and an Awards Coordinator. For the entire Convention Recap click here.

      Did you know that PACO's Pro Bono Committee created a Wills Clinic program that is the only one like it in the country? In 2019, the Pro Bono Committee partnered with the Legal Aid Society of Columbus and conducted fourteen Wills Clinics and prepared documents for 121 senior citizens.

      If you are interested in volunteering in 2020 on the Pro Bono Committee at the Wills Clinics, please register and attend the mandatory CLE for Wills Clinic volunteers. The CLE will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 1:30-4:45 p.m. at the offices of the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, 1108 City Park Avenue, #100, Columbus, Ohio 43206.

      There are all new speakers this year, including an emergency room physician who will discuss the Advance Directive documents from a physician's perspective.       Teresa Scharf for winning the NFPA's Individual Pro Bono Award! Teresa has led PACO's Pro Bono Committee since 2009, and under her leadership, this Committee has reached out and served thousands of low-income individuals in Central Ohio through the PACO-Legal Aid Society of Columbus Pro Bono Wills Clinics program. The Wills Clinic program has enjoyed tremendous success and is always in demand. Because of the positive impact of this effort and the attention it has brought to serving low-income senior citizens throughout Central Ohio, several vendors and law firms have supported the Wills Clinic program in tangible ways over the years to assist in driving its success.

      PACO for winning the NFPA's Paralegal Association Pro Bono Award! PACO's Pro Bono Committee continues to be very active coordinating, volunteering, and assisting attorneys in providing legal services to hundreds of individuals across the greater Columbus and Central Ohio area.       PACO / LASC Pro Bono Wills Clinic CLE - November 13, 2019

      Did you know that PACO's Pro Bono Committee created a Wills Clinic program that is the only one like it in the country? In 2019, the Pro Bono Committee partnered with the Legal Aid Society of Columbus and conducted fourteen Wills Clinics and prepared documents for 121 senior citizens.

      If you are interested in volunteering in 2020 on the Pro Bono Committee at the Wills Clinics, please register and attend the mandatory CLE for Wills Clinic volunteers. The CLE will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 1:30-4:45 p.m. at the offices of the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, 1108 City Park Avenue, #100, Columbus, Ohio 43206.

      There are all new speakers this year, including an emergency room physician who will discuss the Advance Directive documents from a physician's perspective. If you have ever volunteered at a Wills Clinic, or if you commit to doing so at least one time in 2020, the $110.00 fee is waived. Register soon as space is limited!       PACO General Membership Meeting - October 15, 2019 at 12:00 Noon

      Announcing PACO General Membership meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the Columbus Bar Association at 12:00 noon. The Guest Speaker at the General Membership meeting will be, Courtney M. Werning, Esq. As an attorney with Meyer Wilson, Courtney M. Werning devotes her practice to the representation of investors who have claims against their investment advisors and brokerage firms. Her practice includes litigation in state courts and various alternative dispute resolution venues, and she has tried arbitrations to verdict before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the National Futures Association, and the American Arbitration Association. Courtney's recent civil cases and arbitrations have involved allegations related to unsuitable investment strategies, fraud and misrepresentation, Ponzi schemes, legal malpractice, elder financial abuse, and securities act claims. She has published several articles addressing investors' issues for the Ohio Association of Justice and the Ohio Division of Securities, and she frequently contributes to the Meyer Wilson Fraud and Investigation Blog.

      Guest Speaker topic will be: Preventing Investment Fraud and Pursuing Investor Claims - Every year, Ohioans lose millions of dollars as a result of misconduct and investment schemes, often times by licensed stockbrokers and brokerage firms. Claims brought against brokers and their firms are typically subject to mandatory arbitration. This session will provide information to help you, your family, and your clients avoid becoming victims of investment fraud and other stockbroker misconduct. It will also provide an overview of the mandatory arbitration process through which most customer disputes against stockbrokers and brokerage firms are decided.

      The NFPA 2019 Annual Convention will take place in Rochester, NY from October 10-13, 2019, and will have:

      • Wednesday, October 9, 2019 - an unofficial kickoff with a welcome reception hosted by the local paralegal association at the Genesee Brew House.
      • Thursday, October 10, 2019 - will be spent attending various educational sessions, and concludes with a board meeting that all delegates are encourages to attend.
      • Friday, October 11, 2019 - each of the NFPA Regions will hold their board meetings followed by the treasurer's meeting. The evening social will be held at the George Eastman Museum.
      • Saturday, October 12, 2019 - is the first day of policy meetings, and they will continue through Sunday, October 13, 2019 afternoon.
