The Honorable John W. McCormac Award

PACO congratulates Kathy McGranahan for receiving the 2009 The Honorable John W. McCormac Award. This annual award is given by Capital University Law School ("Capital")* and the Columbus Bar Association ("CBA") to paralegals for outstanding service to the paralegal profession and is based upon the following criteria: (1) length of involvement in the paralegal profession; (2) support of paralegal educational efforts; (3) efforts to increase the credibility and status of the profession; and (4) service to the legal community and professional organizations. Kathy exemplifies all of that and more and truly is a deserving recipient.

In 1972, The Honorable John W. McCormac envisioned a new level of employee who could perform substantive legal work under the direct supervision and direction of an attorney, thus giving the attorney time to handle more intricate matters. He brought the idea to Capital and the CBA and together they formed the first paralegal program formed as a joint venture between a law school and a bar association in the US.

Kathy is currently working for Chester, Wilcox & Saxbe as a litigation paralegal and with Scioto Properties LLC as a housing support coordinator. Serving as an adjunct professor at Capital, she teaches ethics and mentors many, many students. She is involved with the Scioto Ridge job networking group and is extremely active with the Ohio State Bar Association, CBA and PACO. She has been on PACO's board and its many committees. Whenever there is a need within any of the organizations, Kathy will volunteer or complete a project that has not been seen through to fruition. She began PACO's first website and participated with the OSBA in creating the criteria and testing requirements for the paralegal accreditation program.
